Route Overview & Local Insights

This 12.2km loop offers a quintessential Mendip Hills experience, blending technical woodland trails with expansive, weather-beaten moorland. Starting near Burrington, runners will tackle a significant 309m elevation gain, primarily concentrated in the climb toward Beacon Batch, the highest point in the range at 325m. The terrain is a true mixed bag: you will find roughly 5km of paved or hard-packed surfaces, but the heart of the run is defined by rugged singletrack and grassy paths that can become notoriously muddy after a Somerset rain. Expect a demanding "SL" (Stiff/Large) course profile that tests your climbing legs before rewarding you with a sweeping descent back through Burrington Ham.

Steeped in Iron Age history, the route skirts the impressive ramparts of Dolebury Warren, an ancient hillfort where wild thyme and rare butterflies thrive among the limestone grasslands. As you summit Black Down, keep an eye out for the "burrows"—Bronze Age burial mounds that dot the plateau—and the unique "Starfish" decoy sites used during WWII to divert bombers from nearby Bristol. This area is a favorite for local fell runners who appreciate the wild, exposed feeling of the Mendips, offering panoramic views that stretch across the Bristol Channel to the Welsh hills on a clear day. It is a landscape that feels much larger than its mileage suggests.
