This 6.8km out-and-back route offers a flat, traffic-free escape through the heart of the Nene Valley. Starting from Little Irchester, you’ll follow the Nene Way toward Ditchford Lane, enjoying a completely level path that is ideal for sustained tempo efforts or a relaxed recovery jog. As an unpaved trail, runners will experience a mix of compacted earth and riverside grass, which stays relatively firm but can become tacky after a typical Northamptonshire rainfall. With zero meters of ascent, it is one of the fastest natural corridors in Wellingborough, providing wide-open views of the surrounding floodplains and the gentle curve of the River Nene.
Steeped in local heritage, this section of the Nene Way traverses an area known for its traditional leather and shoemaking history, though today it serves as a vital green lung for Wellingborough. The route skirts the edge of the Stanwick Lakes region and the local Embankment, where the river once powered mills and transported goods. As you run, keep an eye out for the diverse birdlife at the nearby Ditchford Lakes and Meadows—a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)—where grey herons and kingfishers are frequent spectators to your morning intervals. It’s a peaceful stretch that perfectly blends the town’s industrial past with its modern focus on nature conservation.
