This 21.6km loop is a runner’s dream for those chasing a personal best or looking for a seamless long-distance training run in North Lincolnshire. Starting from the market town of Brigg, the route follows the Ancholme Way, a beautifully maintained path that mirrors the River Ancholme. The terrain is exceptionally flat with a 90% paved surface, making it ideal for maintaining a consistent cadence. You’ll enjoy a smooth out-and-back stretch to Saxby Bridge before tackling the only notable elevation change—a short, punchy incline toward Saxby All Saints. The return leg through the charming "low villages" of Bonby and Carr Lane offers a change of scenery before reconnecting with the riverside trail for a fast finish back into town.
Rich in agricultural heritage, the Ancholme Valley has been a vital artery for the region since the Roman era, though the "New River" you run alongside today was engineered to drain the Lincolnshire Carrs in the 17th and 18th centuries. As you pass through Saxby All Saints, look out for the distinctive Victorian architecture; the village was largely rebuilt as an "estate village" by the Hope-Barton family, giving it a uniform, picturesque character. This route perfectly captures the quiet, expansive beauty of the English countryside, where the big North Lincolnshire skies meet the tranquil waters of the Ancholme, providing a peaceful backdrop for every mile of your half marathon distance.
