Starting at the iconic Stadium of Light, this 6.9km run offers a fantastic mix of Sunderland's industrial heritage and modern riverside regeneration. The route is predominantly paved and relatively flat, with just enough gentle undulation to keep things interesting as you traverse the north bank of the River Wear. Runners will enjoy a fast, straightforward stretch along the cycleway before hitting the standout architectural highlight: the Northern Spire bridge. This loop back via the riverside paths provides a refreshing breeze off the water and a clear, manageable terrain that is perfect for steady tempo runs or a scenic morning jog.
Sunderland’s identity is deeply rooted in shipbuilding and glassmaking, and this route takes you through the very heart of that history. As you pass the Stadium of Light, you’re standing on the site of the former Monkwearmouth Colliery, once the deepest mine in the world. Transitioning from the cathedral of football to the Northern Spire—a 105-metre-tall mast that has become a symbol of the city's future—you’ll experience the perfect snapshot of Wearside’s evolution. Local runners often favor this stretch for its unobstructed views and the sense of space you get once you leave the stadium precinct and head toward Hylton Park.
