Experience the quintessential beauty of North Norfolk on this diverse 9.9km loop through the majestic Holkham Estate. This route offers a perfect blend of terrains, featuring roughly 45% paved surfaces complemented by undulating parkland trails and woodland paths. Runners will tackle twice the modest ascent of 89m, making for several "hilly" sections that provide a satisfying challenge without being overly punishing. Starting at the historic East Lodge, you'll sweep around the shimmering lake—keep an eye out for the resident fallow deer—before ascending toward the towering Obelisk. The final stretch takes you through the atmospheric Old Plantation, offering a cool, sheltered finish under the canopy of ancient trees.
Holkham Park is steeped in agricultural and architectural history, serving as the seat of the Earls of Leicester. As you run past the grand Holkham Hall, an 18th-century Palladian masterpiece, it’s easy to see why this area is considered the jewel of the Norfolk coast. The Obelisk you encounter mid-run was built in 1729 as a focal point for the estate centuries before the hall itself was completed. This landscape was famously shaped by "Coke of Norfolk," a pioneer of the British Agricultural Revolution. Beyond the gates, the estate borders the Holkham National Nature Reserve, where the dunes and pine forests meet the North Sea, making this an essential destination for any runner visiting the English countryside.
