This 6km loop through Beeston Regis Heath offers a quintessential North Norfolk trail experience, balancing gentle inclines with rewarding coastal woodland views. Starting near Beeston Hall School, the route transitions from tracks into thick canopy, where common gorse and heather line the path. With approximately 85m of ascent, the climb is manageable but provides enough "hilly" character to keep your heart rate up before you hit the flat, fast woodland plateaus. The terrain is largely unpaved and soft underfoot, occasionally crossing paved sections, making it an ideal choice for runners looking to escape the asphalt and enjoy a mix of sheltered forest trails and open heathland beauty.
Steeped in local history, Beeston Regis Heath is part of the Cromer Ridge, a terminal moraine formed during the last ice age, which gives this part of Norfolk its surprisingly undulating topography. As you descend toward Calves Well Lane, you are running through a landscape that has served as a landmark for North Sea sailors for centuries. The area is also home to the ruins of Beeston Priory nearby, and local folklore often speaks of "Black Shuck," the ghostly black dog said to roam these very heaths. Today, it is a much more peaceful sanctuary for runners and wildlife alike, offering some of the best elevated views across the North Norfolk coastline toward the sea.
