This 9.1km loop through the heart of West Norfolk offers a perfect blend of undulating countryside and tranquil riverside paths. Starting in the historic village of Castle Acre, you'll head west along the Nar Valley Way, a well-trodden trail that follows the gentle flow of the River Nar. With a modest 46m of ascent and a mix of paved sections (roughly 20%) and natural footpaths, the terrain is varied enough to keep your legs engaged without being overly punishing. Runners will experience a mix of sheltered woodland strips, open meadows, and quiet country lanes as they navigate through West Acre and South Acre before returning to the start.
Steeped in medieval history, this route treats runners to spectacular views of the 11th-century Castle Acre Priory and the remains of the sprawling Norman castle. The area is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and the River Nar is one of the UK’s rare chalk streams, known for its crystal-clear waters and diverse wildlife. As you run through these ancient "Acre" villages, you are following in the footsteps of centuries of pilgrims and traders who once used these paths as vital links between the monasteries and the Norfolk coast. It is a quiet, atmospheric pocket of England that feels miles away from the hustle of modern life.
