This 9.1km loop offers a quintessential Norfolk trail running experience, blending woodland shelter with the expansive horizon of the Wash. Starting near the Dersingham Bypass, you’ll tackle a hilly, unpaved terrain that demands good stability but rewards you with varied scenery. The route takes you along the fringes of the Lodge Hill Plantation, where the sandy soil and pine-scented air provide a rugged, natural track. As you transition from the trees toward the coast, the course opens up, offering a refreshing sea breeze and a flat, fast middle section before looping back for your return climb through the other side of the plantation.
Snettisham and the surrounding West Norfolk countryside are steeped in ancient history and are a haven for wildlife. Running through this area means sharing the landscape with a vast array of birdlife; the nearby Snettisham RSPB reserve is world-renowned for its "Whirligig" of wading birds. The Lodge Hill area itself is part of the Royal Estate land, characterized by its unique acidic heathland and ironstone soils. As you traverse these paths, you are running through a landscape that has served as a royal hunting ground and a vital coastal defense for centuries, making every kilometer feel connected to the deep heritage of the Norfolk coast.
