Experience the tranquil beauty of the Breckland landscape with this gentle 5.4km loop through the heart of Thetford. Starting at the verdant Abbey Meadows, this route is remarkably flat with only 10m of ascent, making it an ideal choice for recovery runs or local speed work. You will spend the majority of your miles on well-maintained river paths, tracing the serene banks of the Little Ouse before joining the River Thet as it winds toward Castle Street. With 75% of the course paved and the remainder on firm natural trails, it offers a reliable underfoot experience in most weather conditions while providing a refreshing waterside backdrop.
Beyond the scenic waterways, this route is steeped in East Anglian history. As you loop around the Castle Hill area, you are running past the remains of one of the tallest Norman motte-and-bailey mounds in England—a site that has stood sentry over the town since the 11th century. Thetford was once the ancient capital of East Anglia, and these river paths were historically vital for trade and milling. Today, they serve as a lush green corridor where you might spot kingfishers or grey herons. The blend of medieval heritage and the unique "Brecks" ecology makes this short circuit one of the most culturally rich runs in the region.
