Route Overview & Local Insights

Enjoy the serene beauty of the Norfolk Broads on this 7.9km loop starting from Acle. This route is exceptionally flat with only 10m of total ascent, making it an ideal choice for runners looking for a steady tempo session or a peaceful recovery run. You'll spend about a quarter of the journey on paved surfaces, while the rest takes you along scenic riverside paths following the River Bure and Upton Dyke. Expect soft trail underfoot as you navigate the waterways towards Upton Green, finishing with a charming stretch through open fields and past the historic church at Fishley. The terrain is largely unshaded, providing wide-open views of the famous Norfolk skies.

Acle is often described as the "Gateway to the Broads," and this route perfectly captures the transition from a historic market town to the wild, marshy landscapes that define this region. As you run alongside the River Bure, keep an eye out for traditional Broads sailing cruisers and local wildlife like herons or kingfishers. The return leg through Fishley offers a touch of local history; the isolated St Mary's Church at Fishley dates back to the Norman era and stands as a quiet sentinel over the surrounding farmland. This area has been a vital hub for river trade for centuries, and running these paths allows you to experience the same tranquil atmosphere that has drawn visitors to the Broads for generations.
