This 6.5km loop offers a fantastic blend of flat, fast-paced sections and diverse trail terrain, making it a favorite for St Helens runners looking for variety without excessive climbing. Starting with a gentle loop around Clock Face Country Park, you’ll enjoy a predominantly paved and well-maintained surface that is perfect for settling into a steady rhythm. The second half of the route transitions into the more rugged and visually striking Sutton Manor Woodland. While the overall ascent is a modest 29m, the undulating nature of the woodland trails provides a rewarding challenge for your legs and lungs, all while surrounded by lush greenery and reclaimed natural beauty.
Steeped in industrial heritage, this route traverses land that was once the heart of the Lancashire coal industry. Clock Face Country Park and Sutton Manor were both former colliery sites, now transformed into vibrant green spaces as part of the Forest of Merseyside. The highlight of the skyline is undoubtedly "Dream," a stunning 20-meter high sculpture by Jaume Plensa located at the summit of the former Sutton Manor colliery spoil tip. Running here offers a unique perspective on the area's transformation from a powerhouse of the industrial revolution to a peaceful sanctuary for wildlife and local outdoor enthusiasts.
