This 8.5km loop offers runners a fantastic blend of Loughborough’s urban edge and the rugged beauty of the Charnwood Forest. Starting with a gentle, paved stretch through the university grounds, the route serves as a perfect warm-up before you hit the steady ascent into The Outwoods. Once under the canopy, you’ll trade the asphalt for bare earth trails that wind through ancient woodland. With roughly 89m of elevation gain, it’s a moderately active run that feels much more remote than it actually is, providing a satisfying technical challenge for those looking to practice their footwork on natural terrain without leaving the outskirts of town.
The Outwoods is one of the oldest woodland sites in Charnwood, spanning 110 acres of what was once part of the vast, ancient hunting grounds of the Charnwood Forest. As you navigate the winding loops, you are running through a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), famous for its unique Precambrian rock formations—some of the oldest in England. This area is a cherished local secret, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling student hub of the nearby University. Keep an eye out for the bluebells in the spring or the vibrant ferns in the summer, which make this hidden gem a visual treat for trail runners year-round.
