The Big Bear Beacon Hill route offers a punchy 5.4km loop through the heart of Charnwood’s rugged landscape. Starting near the Lower Car Park cafe, you’ll tackle a steady ascent on well-maintained perimeter paths, gaining roughly 100 meters in elevation as you climb toward the Upper Car Park. While the official loop skirts just past the famous trig point, the real reward is the second half of the run: a long, sweeping descent at a beautifully runnable gradient that lets you open up your stride and fly back down to the finish field. With a 90% paved surface, it’s an ideal choice for runners who want the thrill of hill training without the technical difficulty of deep mud or uneven trails.
Located within the Charnwood Forest, Beacon Hill is the second-highest point in Leicestershire and is steeped in ancient history. The area is famous for its 600-million-year-old Precambrian volcanic rocks, some of the oldest in the world, and was once the site of a Bronze Age hillfort. As you navigate the loop, you’re running through a landscape that has served as a lookout point for millennia. This specific circuit is a staple for Big Bear Events, known for their inclusive "6-hour challenge" format where the goal isn't just speed, but endurance and laps. Whether you are chasing a personal best on the climb or enjoying a steady hike through the woods, the view across the Soar Valley makes every meter of effort worth it.
