Experience the rugged beauty of Lancashire on this 8.5km circuit through the dramatic Pendle Hills. Starting from the charming village of Barley Green, this route offers a challenging ascent of 326m, taking you past the tranquil Lower and Upper Ogden Reservoirs before a technical climb through Ogden Clough. You'll reach the iconic summit of Pendle Hill, where runners are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the Ribble Valley and beyond. Be prepared for a mix of terrain, including gravel paths and steep fell-side grass, and remember that with sections exceeding 500m in elevation, the weather can shift from sunshine to mist in minutes.
Steeped in dark history and folklore, Pendle Hill is most famous for its association with the 1612 Pendle Witches, and local legend suggests their spirits still roam the moorland. Historically, the area was also a site of great spiritual significance; it was here in 1652 that George Fox had a vision that led to the founding of the Quaker movement. Today, the village of Barley serves as the ultimate runner’s hub, offering a warm community atmosphere and the perfect post-run recovery spot at the local pubs or the popular cabin cafe, where you can swap stories of your climb with fellow trail enthusiasts.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
