Starting from the iconic Nick of Pendle, this 10.4km circuit offers a quintessential fell running experience in the heart of the Ribble Valley. The route is a spirited loop that takes you across rugged terrain, climbing to heights above 500m as you traverse Turn Head and Downham Moor. With 251m of ascent, runners should expect technical trails underfoot and some challenging hills that will test your climbing legs. The loop reaches its pinnacle on the broad plateau of Pendle Hill before descending via the historic Ribble Valley Jubilee Path, providing wide-open vistas and a true sense of exposure to the elements—proper fell shoes and a windproof layer are highly recommended for this Lancashire classic.
Beyond the physical challenge, Pendle Hill is steeped in a dark and fascinating history, most notably as the home of the Pendle Witches who were tried in 1612. As you run through the often-misty landscape of Downham Moor, it’s easy to see why the area has inspired centuries of folklore and supernatural tales. The Nick of Pendle itself is a famous pass known to local cyclists and runners alike for its steep gradients and commanding views over the Forest of Bowland. This route captures the wild spirit of the Ribble Valley, blending legendary English history with some of the most rewarding trail running in Northern England.
