Tackle the legendary slopes of Lancashire with this 8.9km anticlockwise loop starting from the charming village of Barley. This route is a rewarding challenge for trail runners, featuring a significant 324m climb that takes you above the 500m contour line. Expect a mixture of terrain, including well-maintained stony paths and traditional flagstone sections that help navigate the more rugged upland stretches. While the ascent to the summit of Pendle Hill is demanding, the descent via the Ogden Reservoirs offers a fast and scenic return to the valley. Given the exposed nature of the moorland, runners should be prepared for sudden weather shifts, even when the village below seems calm.
Beyond the technical trail, Pendle Hill is steeped in dark and fascinating history, most notably as the site of the infamous 1612 Pendle Witch Trials. As you traverse the summit plateau, you are running through a landscape that has inspired writers and seekers for centuries, including George Fox, whose vision here led to the founding of the Quaker movement. Today, the area is a cornerstone of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. After finishing your run, the village of Barley offers a quintessential English setting to refuel, with local pubs that have long served as the meeting point for members of the local fell running community.
