Route Overview & Local Insights

This 7.8km loop through Lancaster offers a refreshingly flat and fast experience, perfect for runners looking to maintain a steady tempo or enjoy a scenic recovery effort. Starting on Sibsey Street, you’ll quickly join the historic Lancaster Canal, heading north on a smooth, 100% paved towpath. The highlight of the route is crossing the magnificent Lune Aqueduct, where you transition from the tranquil canal side to the sweeping banks of the River Lune. With only 21 meters of total ascent, this is an accessible "sea-level" style run that showcases the best of Lancashire’s waterside trails without any taxing climbs.

Beyond the physical effort, this route is a journey through Lancaster’s industrial and architectural heritage. The Lune Aqueduct, completed in 1797, is a masterpiece of civil engineering designed by John Rennie, standing 60 feet above the river and offering panoramic views of the surrounding valley. As you loop back toward the city center along the river, you are following ancient trade routes that once made Lancaster one of the busiest ports in the North West. It’s a favorite path for local running clubs, providing a peaceful escape from the city traffic while remaining conveniently close to the heart of town.
