The OMM Scotch on the Rocks is a quintessential Lancaster loop that packs a diverse range of terrain into an 11.3km circuit. Starting with a flat, rhythmic warm-up along the River Lune, runners will soon face the route's main challenge: the steady climb up Denny Bank. While the 89m of total ascent might seem modest, the undulations through the lush greens of Williamson Park provide a fantastic interval-style workout. You can expect a mix of surfaces, with roughly 75% being paved road or hard-packed path, while the remaining sections offer a softer, trail-like feel. The technical stepped descent toward Quarry Road requires nimble footwork before you transition onto the Lancaster Canal for a blissfully flat, scenic cruise back to the finish.
Local runners know this route as the "grand tour" of Lancaster’s historical landmarks. As you navigate through Williamson Park, you’ll run in the shadow of the iconic Ashton Memorial, a folly built by "Lord of the Smooth" James Williamson that offers panoramic views across Morecambe Bay to the Lakeland fells. The transition from the industrial heritage of the canal—once the main artery for North West trade—to the serene riverbanks captures the unique character of this historic city. Whether you're dodging the resident peacocks in the park or timing your run to catch the sunset over the Lune, this route offers a perfect blend of urban grit and Victorian elegance.
