Tackling the Clougha Pike loop in Caton-With-Littledale is a rite of passage for fell runners in the Forest of Bowland. This 9.1km route is a true Category SL (Short Local) fell run, packing 313 meters of vertical gain into a relatively short distance. Starting from the parking area on Littledale Road, you’ll trade paved surfaces for rugged heather and peaty singletrack. The terrain is notoriously boggy in sections, requiring nimble footwork and a tolerance for mud, especially as you climb toward the 413m summit. While the ascent is testing, the descent offers a technical challenge for those looking to sharpen their downhill skills on uneven moorland trails.
Beyond the physical challenge, Clougha Pike holds a significant place in Lancashire's landscape as the westernmost point of the Bowland fells. On a clear day, the "exposed" nature of the peak rewards runners with panoramic views stretching across Morecambe Bay to the Lake District peaks and even the Isle of Man. The area was historically used for stone quarrying, and you can still spot the gritstone boulders that give the fell its rugged character. Local runners know that the weather here is famously fickle; Clougha often gathers its own cloud system while the valley below remains sunny, making it an essential training ground for developing mountain navigation skills and resilience.
