This 14.3km loop from Hurstwood is a quintessential Pennine fell running experience, offering a balanced mix of rugged gritstone tracks and sweeping moorland vistas. With 300m of elevation gain and a peak altitude exceeding 500m, runners should expect a moderate challenge as they navigate the Mary Towneley Loop toward Widdop Reservoir. The terrain is roughly one-third paved, leaving the rest to technical trails and moorland paths that can become soft and heavy after rain. The circuit around the reservoir provides a stunning, relatively flat mid-point reprieve before you climb back over the high ground via the Burnley Way to return to the trailhead.
Situated on the eastern edge of Burnley, Hurstwood is a historic hamlet steeped in literary and industrial heritage. The village was once home to the family of Elizabethan poet Edmund Spenser, and the rugged landscape you'll traverse inspired the dark, atmospheric settings often associated with the nearby Bronte country. Widdop Reservoir itself is a feat of Victorian engineering, nestled within a dramatic basin of natural gritstone outcrops like the "Great Bride Stones." This area is notorious for its rapidly shifting microclimate; it is not uncommon to leave Burnley in sunshine and find yourself in thick hill fog by the time you reach the reservoir's edge.
