This 10.5km circuit provides a quintessential Lake District fell running experience, balancing technical ascents with breathtaking scenery. Starting from the serene Blea Tarn, runners face a demanding climb to the summit of Lingmoor Fell (469m). Expect a mix of rugged, stony tracks and soft grassy trails that test your footwork, especially during the descent into Little Langdale. With 355m of elevation gain and sections nearing the 500m mark, this route is classified as a Category SL (Short Local) fell run, offering a punchy challenge that rewards you with panoramic views of the Langdale Pikes across the valley.
Lingmoor Fell takes its name from the heather (ling) that blankets its slopes, turning a vibrant purple in late summer. Beyond the natural beauty, this route traverses an area rich in industrial history; you will cross the iconic Slater’s Bridge, an ancient packhorse bridge made of slate that served the local quarries for centuries. While the route feels remote and wild, it is steeped in the heritage of Cumbrian slate mining. Be mindful that the weather in the Great Langdale area is notoriously fickle—clouds can drop rapidly on the fell tops, so carry appropriate kit even if it looks clear at the trailhead.
