This 8.5km loop offers an invigorating blend of terrain, perfect for runners looking to transition from suburban roads to serene woodland trails. Starting in Hawkenbury, you’ll tackle a mix of approximately 75% paved surfaces and 25% natural paths, including a refreshing stretch through the shady canopy of High Wood. With 110m of ascent, the route is moderately hilly, providing just enough elevation to test your glutes without becoming overwhelming. The clockwise loop toward Pembury delivers sweeping views of the Kent countryside before returning you to the start on well-trodden paths that handle most weather conditions with ease.
Tunbridge Wells is steeped in aerobic history, having been a popular destination for health-seekers since the discovery of the Chalybeate Spring in the 17th century. While most visitors flock to the Pantiles, local runners know that the southeastern outskirts near Hawkenbury offer some of the best-connected green corridors in the area. High Wood itself is a remnant of the ancient forests that once covered the Weald, providing a natural buffer that makes this 8.5km circuit feel much more remote than its proximity to the town center suggests. It’s a favorite local training ground for those preparing for the undulating Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon.
