This 10km loop offers a fantastic blend of trail and road running, perfectly capturing the varied landscape of Rochester. Starting in the residential area of Borstal, you'll tackle a steady climb as you head toward the lush greenery of Shoulder of Mutton Wood and Monk Wood. With 155m of ascent, the route classifies as moderately hilly, providing a solid workout for your glutes and calves. The terrain is split nearly evenly, with 55% paved surfaces and the remainder following woodland paths. The second half of the run offers a rhythmic return along the railway line, where the flatter profile allows for a strong, fast finish back into town.
Steeped in history, this area of Kent was a frequent haunt for Charles Dickens, and you can certainly feel that Victorian charm as you traverse the outskirts of this ancient cathedral city. Monk Wood itself is part of a larger network of ancient woodland that once covered much of the North Downs. Local runners favor this route for its sense of escape; despite the proximity to the HS1 railway line, the dense canopy of Shoulder of Mutton Wood provides a serene buffer from the hustle and bustle of the Medway towns. Keep an eye out for bluebells in the spring and enjoy the expansive views over the River Medway valley as you crest the higher sections of the loop.
