This 5.6km trail loop offers a quintessential coastal running experience along the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. Starting from the National Trust Visitor Centre, you’ll tackle a moderately challenging ascent of 148m as you navigate the undulating Saxon Shore Way. The terrain is entirely off-pavement, consisting of rugged clifftop paths and grassy trails that can become slick after a coastal mist, so reliable trail shoes are a must. As you push toward Langdon Hole and Fan Bay, the elevation changes provide a fantastic interval-style workout, rewarding every climb with breathtaking, unobstructed views across the English Channel toward the French coastline.
Running here is a journey through British history and geological wonder. The chalk cliffs, formed millions of years ago, have long served as a symbolic sentinel for the island, famously visible to soldiers returning from the continent during World War II. As you loop back through Fan Bay, you are passing directly over the Deep Shelter tunnels, a reminder of Dover's strategic wartime importance. The area is also a haven for local flora and fauna; keep an eye out for the distinctive Exmoor ponies used for conservation grazing and the rare Adonis Blue butterfly that thrives in this unique chalk grassland habitat.
