This 4.0km loop at Hawkshill Down offers runners a perfect blend of coastal scenery and manageable intensity. Starting from the Visitor Centre, the route takes you on a steady climb towards the iconic South Foreland Lighthouse over a mix of paved sections and well-trodden trails. With a modest 21m of ascent, it’s a hilly but accessible run that rewards your effort with breathtaking views of the White Cliffs of Dover. The return leg along the Saxon Shore Way provides a faster, breezy finish with the English Channel as your constant companion, making it an ideal choice for a brisk morning tempo or a scenic recovery jog.
Hawkshill Down is more than just a beautiful vantage point; it is a site steeped in history and natural significance. Managed by the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership, this area was a First World War aerodrome and now serves as a protected memorial and wildlife haven. As you run, you’ll be crossing land that saw intense activity during both World Wars, now reclaimed by chalk grassland flowers and rare butterflies. The South Foreland Lighthouse, which marks the turnaround point, is a landmark of Victorian engineering and was the first lighthouse in the world to use an electric light, adding a touch of historical grandeur to your coastal miles.
