This 6.1km trail loop offers a quintessential Kentish running experience, characterized by sharp climbs and rewarding vistas across the North Downs. Starting in the charming village of Temple Ewell, runners will immediately tackle the undulating terrain of the Lydden and Temple Ewell Downs. With an ascent of 120m over a relatively short distance, this "hilly" rated course is a fantastic workout for those looking to build leg strength on technical, unpaved surfaces. You can expect sweeping grass tracks and narrow chalk paths that wind through the protected nature reserve, providing a rugged, natural feel just a stone’s throw from Dover.
Beyond the physical challenge, this area is steeped in ecological and historical significance. The Lydden and Temple Ewell Downs represent some of the finest chalk downland in Europe, home to rare orchids and vibrant butterfly populations, including the Adonis Blue. As you navigate the two loops of this figure-eight course, you are running through a landscape shaped by centuries of traditional grazing. The village of Temple Ewell itself derives its name from the Knights Templar, who held the manor in the 12th century, adding a touch of medieval history to your post-run cool down in this stunning corner of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
