Route Overview & Local Insights

This 4.7km out-and-back route offers a perfectly flat, paved run that is ideal for speed work or a relaxing recovery session along the stunning Isle of Wight coastline. Starting at the Hope Road car park in Shanklin, you’ll follow the Esplanade all the way to the iconic Sandown Pier. With 100% paved terrain and zero elevation gain, it is a runner’s paradise for those looking to bank consistent splits while soaking in the panoramic views of the English Channel. The refreshing sea breeze and the rhythmic sound of waves make this one of the most revitalizing stretches for a seaside run in Southern England.

Shanklin and Sandown are steeped in Victorian seaside heritage, and running between them allows you to experience the classic charm of the "Garden Isle." As you pass along the foot of the dramatic sandstone cliffs, look out for the historic lift that has connected the town to the beach since 1891. This area is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and the wide bay is famous for its golden sands and traditional beach huts. After your run, you’re perfectly positioned to explore Shanklin Chine or enjoy a well-earned coffee at one of the many cafes lining the promenade, where runners are always a welcome sight.
