If you are looking for a PB-friendly surface or a scenic recovery session, this 8.0km loop from Freshwater to Yarmouth is a standout choice on the Isle of Wight. This "SL" course begins with a wonderfully flat stretches along the historic Freshwater Causeway and the old railway line, tracking the eastern bank of the River Yar. With a negligible ascent of just 12 meters, the terrain is exceptionally accessible, transitioning from the smooth, paved railway path to gently undulating trails through lush woodlands and open fields on the return leg. Runners can expect a mix of firm paths and soft-surface trails that provide a refreshing variety for the legs without the exhaustion of the Island's more famous chalk downs.
The River Yar is a unique geographical feature, nearly cutting the "West Wight" off from the rest of the island, and running here feels like stepping back into a quieter era of English maritime history. As you approach Yarmouth, you’ll see the silhouette of the 16th-century Yarmouth Castle, built by Henry VIII to protect the Solent. Local runners often recommend timing your run with the tide; when the tide is high, the river becomes a mirror for the sky, and you’ll share the path with an abundance of red squirrels and wading birds like Curlews and Little Egrets. Finishing back in Freshwater, you are just a stone's throw from the haunts of Victorian poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, making this route as rich in heritage as it is in natural beauty.
