This 16.1km point-to-point journey takes you across the backbone of the Isle of Wight, following the legendary Tennyson Trail from the historic village of Carisbrooke to the chalk cliffs of Freshwater Bay. With 295m of ascent and a "3/5" hill rating, runners can expect a moderate challenge characterized by undulating chalk downs and sheltered woodland bridleways. The terrain is roughly 30% paved, meaning you’ll spend the majority of your run on firm turf and gravel paths. It is an exposed route that reaches significant elevations for the island, offering sweeping 360-degree views, but it requires runners to be mindful of shifting coastal weather conditions. Once you descend into Freshwater Bay, the Southern Vectis bus service provides a convenient link back to Newport, making this an ideal long-distance training run.
Steeped in literary and medieval history, this route follows in the footsteps of Alfred Lord Tennyson, the Victorian Poet Laureate who frequently walked these downs for inspiration. Your starting point, Carisbrooke, is famed for its majestic 12th-century castle where King Charles I was imprisoned before his execution. As you traverse the high ridges toward the west, you are running through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where the landscape has remained largely unchanged for centuries. The arrival at Freshwater Bay is a spectacular finish; the bay is framed by the iconic "Stag" and "Mermaid" chalk stacks, serving as a dramatic reward for your efforts across the island's central hills.
