Route Overview & Local Insights

This 8.2km circuit offers a quintessential Isle of Wight trail experience, blending a demanding initial climb with rewarding panoramic views. Starting in Arreton, runners face an immediate challenge with the ascent up St George’s Lane. The terrain is a mix of approximately 25% paved surfaces and rugged tracks, making it a "semi-loop" that tests both your climbing legs and your technical footing. Once you reach the crest of St George's Down, the path opens up across the chalk downland before a sharp descent leads you onto the Stenbury Trail. This final stretch provides a welcome flat finish, allowing you to find a rhythmic cadence and cool down through the scenic valley floor.

Arreton is one of the Isle of Wight’s most historic villages, nestled in the heart of the Arreton Valley. Running across St George's Down feels like stepping back in time; this area was historically significant for its panoramic vantage points and has long been a favored spot for local hikers and harriers. The Stenbury Trail, which you join for the home stretch, follows an old railway line and traditional bridleways, offering a lush, green corridor that contrasts beautifully with the exposed, windy heights of the Down. Whether you are training for a local fell race or simply soaking in the English countryside, this route captures the agricultural heritage and natural drama of Central Wight.
