This 9.6km loop offers a quintessential St Albans running experience, blending smooth paved sections with the gentle rolling hills of the Hertfordshire countryside. Starting near Bluehouse Hill, you'll tackle a moderate 80m of ascent as you sweep through the private estate of Gorhambury. The terrain is largely firm underfoot, making it ideal for maintaining a steady tempo, though the occasional incline through Potters Crouch will certainly wake up your glutes. Runners should keep a sharp eye on the clock, as the stunning permissive paths through the estate are generally accessible only between 8am and 6pm; outside these hours, the gates are locked to preserve the tranquility of the parkland.
Steeped in Roman and Elizabethan history, this route takes you through the heart of the ancient city of Verulamium. As you return via Verulamium Park, you’ll pass the remnants of the Roman walls and the site of the great Roman theatre, once the third-largest city in Roman Britain. The Gorhambury estate itself is home to the ruins of Old Gorhambury House, built by Sir Nicholas Bacon in the 1560s. This run isn't just a workout; it’s a journey through centuries of English heritage, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city center while staying firmly connected to the local landscape's rich past.
