This 5.3km loop offers a refreshing escape into the lush landscapes of South Hertfordshire. Starting near Bricket Wood, the route is remarkably flat with only 14m of ascent, making it an ideal choice for recovery runs or those looking to maintain a steady tempo. Runners will experience an even split between paved lanes and natural trails, transitioning from the quiet, tree-lined suburban fringes into the muddy, scenic paths of Bricket Wood Common. As you head toward the south-east, keep an eye out for the tranquil waters of the River Colne, which provides a calming backdrop for the second half of your run.
Steeped in local history, Bricket Wood Common is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and remains one of the last remnants of the ancient Lowland Heath and Oak wood that once covered much of the county. This area famously became a hub for the "pleasure seeker" trains from London in the early 20th century, and as you navigate the trails, you can still feel that sense of rural retreat. Today, it remains a favorite for St Albans locals who want to trade the pavement for soft ground and ancient woodland. Be prepared for some damp sections near the riverbanks, especially during the wetter English months, which only adds to the authentic trail-running experience.
This course includes one or more areas where higher levels of caution are recommended and your time is temporarily paused. We suggest reviewing the map in close up, where these sections are shown with dashed lines.
This course includes 0.1 km sections of dashed lines. The total distance for the course including these sections is 5.3 km
