This 4.8km loop offers a fantastic snapshot of East Hertfordshire’s varied terrain, making it a favorite for local runners seeking both a challenge and a scenic cool-down. Starting on the outskirts of Hertford, you'll tackle a steady ascent that serves as a great heart-rate booster before the route levels out and rewards you with a sweeping descent into Ware. The final leg is a beautifully flat, fast stretch along the riverside path, where the paved sections allow for a consistent rhythm. With only 34m of elevation, it’s a "punchy" short course that balances a hilly opening with a serene, water-side finish.
The Kings Mead area is a vital green lung between the historic market towns of Hertford and Ware. This ancient grazing marsh is one of the largest remaining areas of its kind in the county and is a designated Nature Reserve, teeming with birdlife and wildflowers. As you run the riverside section, you are following along the New River and the River Lea, waterways that have shaped the industry and character of East Hertfordshire for centuries. It’s an area where the industrial heritage of the maltings in Ware meets the quiet, pastoral beauty of the English countryside.
