Experience the rugged charm of East Hertfordshire on this scenic 6.1km trail loop through Panshanger Park. This isn't your average park run; with a total ascent of 42m, you'll encounter a series of undulating dips and rises that keep your legs engaged throughout. The highlight—and the main challenge—is a significant climb after crossing the river on the western edge of the park. The terrain is entirely unpaved, offering a authentic trail experience that can get muddy in the winter months, so trail shoes are highly recommended for navigating the natural footpaths and grassy stretches.
Panshanger Park is a site of immense historical and ecological significance, once home to a grand country house and grounds designed by legendary landscape architects Humphrey Repton and Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. As you run, keep an eye out for the Broadwater and the rare chalk stream (the River Mimram) which supports a unique ecosystem. The park is also famous for the Panshanger Great Oak, believed to be over 500 years old. Because the area is managed for both conservation and active quarrying, runners should be mindful of seasonal access restrictions designed to protect local wildlife and ensure visitor safety.
