Starting from the historical shadow of Berkhamsted Castle, this scenic 6.5km loop offers a fantastic blend of groomed paths and gently rolling terrain across the edge of the Chiltern Hills. With a modest 89m of ascent, the route is accessible for most fitness levels, taking runners through the prestigious Berkhamsted Golf Club and onto the Hertfordshire Way. The course is fully paved, making it an excellent choice for a fast-paced tempo session or a consistent steady run even when the English weather turns damp. As you circle through the Ashridge Boundary Trail and return via Alpine Meadow, you’ll experience some of the finest green-space running in Dacorum.
Berkhamsted itself is steeped in history, famously being the site where the crown was offered to William the Conqueror in 1066. While your run begins at the majestic Norman motte-and-bailey castle ruins, you’ll quickly transition into the natural beauty of the "Common"—an area historically used by locals for grazing sheep and gathering gorse. Running through this landscape provides a literal bridge between medieval heritage and the tranquil, wooded outskirts of the Ashridge Estate. It’s a favorite spot for local Harriers and weekend pavement-pounders alike, offering a refreshing escape from the bustle of the High Street.
