This 9.4km loop offers a quintessential Welsh Marches running experience, blending steady climbs with sweeping, runnable descents. Starting from the edge of Kington, the route quickly transitions onto the grassy, open common of Hergest Ridge. With roughly 171m of vertical gain, the ascent is manageable but rewarding, providing firm footing on the mid-section’s natural turf before transitioning to 5km of paved sections on the return. Runners can expect panoramic views across the Black Mountains and the Malvern Hills, making the moderate effort of the ridge climb well worth the breath.
Steeped in local lore and artistic inspiration, Hergest Ridge is perhaps most famous for inspiring Mike Oldfield’s 1974 album of the same name. As you navigate the high ground, keep an eye out for the wild ponies that graze the common and the distinctive "Monkey Puzzle" trees—remnants of a Victorian plantation. The area is a historic crossroads where the Offa’s Dyke Path intersects with ancient drovers' roads. Finishing back near the market town of Kington, you’ll find a welcoming community that has long served as a gateway between the rolling hills of Herefordshire and the rugged mountains of Wales.
