This 8.6km loop through Bromfield offers a quintessential Shropshire trail experience, blending challenging elevation with rewarding views. Starting from Killhorse Lane, the route immediately introduces you to the rugged, unpaved terrain of Mortimer Forest. With over 200m of ascent, the climb toward High Vinnals is the centerpiece of the run, providing a steep, "hilly" workout that will test your climbing strength. Once at the summit, the panoramic views of the Teme Valley and the Clee Hills make the effort worthwhile before a fast, technical descent back along the historic Mortimer Trail. Expect soft forest tracks, potential mud after rain, and a total immersion in nature.
Bromfield and the surrounding Mortimer Forest are steeped in Welsh Marches history, named after the powerful Mortimer family who dominated this borderland in the Middle Ages. The forest itself was once a royal hunting ground, and while the "High Vinnals" may sound mysterious, it is actually a corruption of the word 'vineyard,' hinting at the area's agricultural past. Today, this land is a sanctuary for local wildlife, and runners often share the paths with long-haired fallow deer or buzzards circling above. The mix of ancient woodland and managed timber trails provides a sense of isolation and grandeur that is rare to find so close to the historic town of Ludlow.
