This 7.5km multi-terrain loop offers a quintessential Hampshire running experience, blending rolling chalk downland with serene riverside paths. Starting with a gentle ascent up Compton Down, you’ll tackle some hilly sections that reward you with panoramic views over the Winchester skyline before descending through the quiet, leafy lanes of Compton village. The final leg is a runner’s favorite: a flat, fast finish following the historic River Itchen back toward the city, where the cooling atmosphere of the chalk stream makes for a perfect recovery stretch on the mixed paved and trail surfaces.
Steeped in history, this route traverses parts of the ancient South Downs Way and skirts the edge of the Hockley Viaduct, a striking Victorian landmark. The River Itchen, which you’ll track for the latter part of the run, is renowned as one of the finest chalk streams in the world and was a frequent muse for local resident John Keats. Whether you are navigating the sweeping downs or the lush water meadows, you are running through a landscape that has been preserved for centuries, offering a peaceful escape just moments from the heart of Winchester.
