This 12.2km loop offers a fantastic blend of Hampshire’s finest chalk downlands and smooth valley paths, making it a favorite for Winchester runners looking for variety. Starting with an invigorating climb over Whiteshute Ridge, you'll be treated to panoramic views before sweeping down through Compton Down. The terrain is a mix of approximately 25% paved surfaces and rolling trail segments, featuring a moderate ascent of 134m that provides just enough "hilly" challenge to test your lung capacity without being overwhelming. The final stretch brings you back toward the city via Twyford Down, skirting the base of the iconic St Catherine’s Hill for a fast, scenic finish.
Steeped in history, this area serves as a gateway to the South Downs National Park and follows sections of ancient trackways that have been used for millennia. As you run past St Catherine’s Hill, you are traversing the site of an Iron Age hillfort and a medieval chapel, while the nearby Itchen Valley is world-renowned for its crystal-clear chalk streams. Local runners often recommend this route during the golden hour, as the light hitting the rolling hills of Twyford creates a quintessential English countryside backdrop that makes the 12km fly by.
