Route Overview & Local Insights

The Hayling Billy 10.3km route offers one of the most refreshing coastal running experiences in Hampshire. This dead-flat, out-and-back course follows the well-maintained gravel and paved trails of the former railway line, making it an ideal choice for runners looking to maintain a consistent tempo or chase a personal best. With effectively zero elevation gain, you can focus entirely on your stride while enjoying panoramic views across Langstone Harbour. The terrain is forgiving on the joints, transitioning between solid coastal paths and smooth track, ensuring a high-quality surface regardless of the weather.

Steeped in local heritage, the trail follows the historic route of the "Hayling Billy" train, which connected Havant to the seaside resort of South Hayling from 1867 until its closure in 1963. As you run, you’ll pass through a vital Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), where the mudflats and saltmarshes provide a sanctuary for thousands of Brent Geese and wading birds during the winter months. The path creates a unique bridge between the urban fringe of Havant and the wild, salty air of the coast, offering a sense of escapism that is hard to find on more inland routes.
