This 5.6km off-road loop offers a refreshing escape into the largest freshwater lake in Hampshire. Starting right from Fleet Pond via the station entrance, you’ll enjoy a flat, fast circuit with a mere 11m of ascent, making it an ideal choice for a recovery run or a tempo session on softer terrain. The route takes you along the tranquil eastern bank before tracking the Gelvert Stream toward the Basingstoke Canal. After a brief scenic stretch along the towpath, you'll head back through Barford Close to complete the circuit around the water. Expect a mix of wooded trails and waterside paths that feel miles away from the bustle of town.
Fleet Pond is a site of significant ecological importance and was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as far back as 1951. Local runners often share the trails with a diverse range of birdlife, including reed warblers and the occasional kingfisher. The pond itself has deep historical roots, having served as a valuable fishery for the monks of Winchester in the Middle Ages. Running here offers a unique connection to the natural heritage of Hart, providing an ever-changing landscape throughout the seasons, from the vibrant greens of summer to the misty, atmospheric lake views of a crisp English winter.
