This 8.7km scenic loop through Brockenhurst offers a quintessential New Forest running experience without the daunting elevation of more mountainous trails. Starting on the historic "Castleman’s Corkscrew" (the old Southampton and Dorchester railway line), you'll enjoy a flat, gravel-surfaced warm-up before tackling the gentle climb into Hinchelsea Wood. The terrain transitions beautifully from well-maintained trails to softer, natural woodland floors and finally out onto the grassy expanses of Wilverley Plain. It’s an ideal route for runners looking to vary their footstrike across different surfaces while soaking in the expansive views of the Hampshire heathland.
Steeped in history, this area of the New Forest provides a window into England's industrial and royal past. The railway line you'll traverse was once a vital link through the forest, decommissioned in the 1960s and reclaimed by nature and local fitness enthusiasts. Keep a sharp eye out for the famous New Forest ponies and fallow deer that frequent the Wilverley Plain; they have the right of way here! At just under 9km, this route captures the spirit of the ancient royal hunting grounds, offering a peaceful escape where the only "traffic" you’re likely to encounter is a herd of wandering livestock or a fellow trail runner.
