Route Overview & Local Insights

This 8.8km circuit offers a quintessential New Forest running experience, blending wide-open vistas with secluded woodland trails. Starting from Brockenhurst, you'll tackle a predominantly flat course with a gentle 23m ascent, making it an ideal choice for maintaining a steady tempo. The terrain transitions smoothly from the soft, grassy paths of Black Knowl heathland into the firm, compacted dirt and gravel tracks of the Hursthill and Aldridgehill Inclosures. Runners should be prepared for a bit of light technical work under the canopy, where seasonal mud and tree roots require some nimble footwork, but the rewarding breeze across the open moorland at the finish makes every stride worth it.

Steeped in history, the area around Brockenhurst reflects the unique heritage of the New Forest National Park, a former royal hunting ground established by William the Conqueror. As you traverse Black Knowl, keep an eye out for the iconic New Forest ponies and cattle that roam freely thanks to ancient commoning rights. The "Inclosures" you run through, like Hursthill, were originally fenced off in the 18th and 19th centuries to protect timber from grazing animals—now, they serve as vital habitats and serene corridors for local runners. This route captures the timeless charm of Hampshire's wilderness, where the landscape has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
