This 6.0km loop through Castlefields offers a fantastic mix of terrain for runners who enjoy variety. Starting with a flat, fast-paced stretch along the canal towpath, the route provides a steady warm-up before transitioning into the wooded trails of Windmill Hill. While the 32m ascent is modest, the punchy climb into the woods introduces a bit of elevation that will get your heart rate up. You’ll navigate a mix of 80% paved surfaces and natural forest paths, including a serene, traffic-free section along Norton Lane. It is a perfect choice for those looking to balance rhythmic canal side running with technical, leafy trail segments.
Castlefields itself is steeped in industrial heritage, originally developed as a pioneering New Town community that integrated urban living with the surrounding Cheshire landscape. As you run past the historic Bridgend and Norton stretches, you are retracing the paths of 18th-century boatmen who once powered the region’s commerce. Windmill Hill, the highest point of this run, gets its name from the traditional mills that once stood here to catch the prevailing winds across the Mersey Valley. Today, the area has been reclaimed by nature, offering a green corridor that makes it a favorite spot for local Runcorn harriers and trail enthusiasts alike.
