This 12.2km loop offers a fantastic blend of waterway scenery and flat, fast terrain, making it a favorite for Runcorn runners looking to escape the road. Starting along the historic Bridgewater Canal, you’ll enjoy a mix of paved towpaths and softer, grassy stretches as you head south. The route features a unique tarmac detour around the Preston Brook Tunnel, providing a brief change of pace before dropping down to the tranquil River Weaver and the impressive Dutton Locks. With only 33m of total ascent, it is an ideal course for a steady tempo run or a longer aerobic effort, though be prepared for heavier, muddy footing on the grassy sections of the canal path during the wetter winter months.
Steeped in industrial heritage, this area was once the heart of North West England's transport revolution. The Bridgewater Canal, often called the first true canal in England, and the River Weaver Navigation represent centuries of engineering history that transformed Runcorn and nearby Preston Brook into vital shipping hubs. As you run past the Victorian-engineered Dutton Locks, keep an eye out for the Dutton Viaduct in the distance—a magnificent 20-arch railway bridge built by Joseph Locke and George Stephenson. Today, the bustling commercial traffic has been replaced by narrowboats and local wildlife, offering a peaceful, green corridor for the local running community.
