This 7.0km loop through Overton and Frodsham offers a masterclass in trail running, packing 137m of elevation into a "rollercoaster" experience. As a Category SL (Short Local) fell-style run, you'll navigate a thrilling blend of terrain across Foxhill, Woodhouse Hill, and Frodsham Hill. Runners can expect everything from technical switchback downhills and ancient sunken paths to well-paved sections that allow for a quick turnover. The route is defined by its variety; one moment you are powering up steep stone steps, and the next you are soaring along woody trails with geological outcrops framing your path. It is a challenging but rewarding circuit that rewards the climb with breathtaking, surprising views across the Cheshire plain.
Frodsham Hill, also known as Overton Hill, is steeped in local heritage and formidably marks the start of the famous Sandstone Trail. Historically, these hills served as iron age hillforts, and as you run past Woodhouse Hill, you are traversing ground that has been occupied for millennia. The area is a "Runner's Paradise" because of its unique geology—the dramatic red sandstone cliffs and caves provide a rugged backdrop that feels worlds away from the nearby urban centers. After your session, most local runners gather in the village of Overton or Frodsham’s historic market town, which has served as a crossroads for travelers since the medieval period, making it the perfect spot to refuel and soak in the traditional Cheshire atmosphere.
