This 6.7km loop offers a refreshing escape through Wigan’s post-industrial landscape, blending the straight, steady strides of a former railway line with the scenic charm of the canal towpath. With a negligible 11m of ascent, this is a pancake-flat route perfect for tempo runs or a steady recovery session. You’ll spend the first half tracking the old railway path before looping back along the water. While much of the route is paved or firm, both sections are prone to getting quite muddy after a typical Lancashire downpour, so opting for a pair of trail shoes or reliable hybrids is a smart move to maintain your grip through the sludge.
Steeped in Northern heritage, this route takes you through the heart of Wigan’s industrial history. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal was once the primary artery for transporting coal from local collieries, and as you run past the Red Rock area, you are traversing land that helped fuel the Industrial Revolution. The transition from the rigid iron-road geography of the former railway to the winding, peaceful towpath offers runners a unique perspective on how the local environment has been reclaimed by nature. Keep an eye out for local narrowboats and the occasional heron standing sentry near the locks as you make your way back toward the finish.
