Experience the perfect blend of canal-side cruising and woodland trails on this 8.6km loop through the heart of Trafford. Starting from Oldfield Brow, you'll tackle the technical singletrack of Oldfield Lane before transitioning onto a flat 2km stretch of the Bridgewater Canal towpath. The route then opens up into the expansive grounds of the Dunham Massey estate, where you'll navigate natural trails that offer a mix of firm ground and seasonal mud. With a gentle ascent of just 44m, it’s a relatively flat course, though the "hilly" sections provide just enough undulation to keep your heart rate up and your legs engaged.
Dunham Massey Park is one of the North West’s most cherished National Trust sites, boasting an ancient deer park that dates back to the medieval period. As you run through the estate, keep an eye out for the resident herd of fallow deer that roam freely among the centuries-old oak trees. The area is steeped in history, from the 18th-century mansion to its time as a military hospital during World War I. This route captures the serene, pastoral character of Altrincham’s rural fringes, offering runners a peaceful escape from the nearby urban bustle of Manchester.
