This 3.0km Green-level orienteering course at Dove Stone Reservoir offers a perfect blend of physical challenge and technical navigation for intermediate runners. With 120m of vertical gain packed into a relatively short distance, expect a steep, hilly workout that trades paved paths for rugged, natural Peak District terrain. As a British Orienteering test course, it demands constant mental engagement; you'll be navigating through varied vegetation and undulating moorland verges that provide a much more primitive feel than the standard tourist loop around the water's edge.
Located on the western edge of the Peak District National Park near Greenfield, Dove Stone Reservoir is steeped in industrial and natural history. The area serves as a gateway to the dramatic gritstone edges of the Dark Peak, once a vital water source for the textile mills of nearby Oldham. Runners can enjoy the striking backdrop of the Dovestone Rocks and the Chew Valley, which often see peregrine falcons soaring overhead. This specific route avoids the crowds of the main promenade, taking you into the quieter, more atmospheric sections of the estate managed by the RSPB and United Utilities.
