This 5.9km loop around Bottoms and Valehouse Reservoirs offers a quintessential Peak District running experience without the punishing vertical gain often found in the neighboring fells. With just 35m of ascent, it is a relatively flat "hilly" course that transitions smoothly between paved sections and rustic trails. Runners can expect a firm surface for about 45% of the route, while the remaining dirt paths provide a more natural, tactile feel underfoot—though you should be prepared for some mud during the classic British wet spells. It is a fantastic choice for a steady recovery run or a scenic tempo session, offering stunning water views and the crisp air of the Longdendale Valley.
Located on the western edge of the Peak District near Hadfield, this area is steeped in industrial and natural history. The Longdendale Chain of reservoirs, of which Bottoms and Valehouse are the lowest, was a monumental feat of Victorian engineering designed to provide fresh water to a rapidly growing Manchester. As you run, you’ll pass through landscapes that have inspired locals for generations; notably, Hadfield itself gained fame as the filming location for "The League of Gentlemen." Today, the area serves as a peaceful gateway to the higher moors, providing runners with a sense of isolation and tranquility despite being just a short distance from the local trailhead.
